Denae was born and raised in Malibu, California, and graduated from Santa Monica High School in 1991. She holds degrees in political science and history from the University of California at San Diego, received her J.D. from the University of San Francisco in 2001 and an L.L.M. in Taxation from the University of Washington School of Law in 2003. Denae was admitted to the California State Bar in 2001.

Denae and her husband, Shawn Oatey, moved to Long Beach in 2004. Shawn was born and raised in Long Beach and both have very strong ties to Southern California. Denae and Shawn have started to raise a family and currently have three sons, Tyler, Kyle and Ryan.

Upon moving to Long Beach, Denae joined Madden, Jones, Cole & Johnson in 2004. She practices in the area of estate planning and trust administration as well as business transactions and business entities.
